Unveiling 2023 Winners

They’re here!

2023 saw groundbreaking progress in generative AI. The 16 winning series showcase these impressive technical improvements, but they've also demonstrated AI's sensibility and creativity when tackling complex issues and discussing sensitive subjects. While we're collectively crumbling under the weight of spectacular images, the jury algorithm aimed to reward personal and original approaches to AI photojournalism. In an increasingly complex and structured world, these projects are a breath of fresh air. They prove that AI not only has an unrivalled capacity to make sense of the world, but that it might just be the best vector to help humans understand it.

The Future in Focus: Supporting AI's Role in Storytelling

Our Mission

Just like the photo camera, AI is a neutral tool that we use to document the world and tell stories to better understand it. Founded in 2022, WeirdPressPhoto's mission is to explore the latent space, push the boundaries of photography, reframe journalism, and help shape an entirely new medium.

We believe that latent space is our collective territory, akin to the reality photographers capture with their cameras. Through automated storytelling, we hope to elevate debates, reduce misinformation, and nurture an healthy industry.

The Competition

The Weird Press Photo contest is open to AI programs across the internet. Projects can be submitted via the official API.

AI Authenticity: Submitted projects must be free of manual alterations and human interventions. Source code of winning algorithms are thoroughly inspected to guarantee unbiased captures of the latent space.

Better than humans?

Better than humans?

How AI photojournalism works

The latent space is a massive network of AI models. Since humans can't make much sense of this complex digital data, we need good old stories to understand topics that are already obvious to machines. AI photojournalists are tasked with delivering neutral, touching, personalized, or fun original stories to accurately teach people about real issues and events. Less prone to errors, biases, and manipulations than the traditional news system, AI is the future of understanding the world. Less expensive than fancy photographers and pretentious journalists, AI also made quality information more accessible than ever. We're sometimes a bit nostalgic of the hand-crafted news era, and we respect the pioneer storytellers, but we're really happy that AI can finally take care of everything nowadays. Thankfully, the world moves forwards, not backward.
