Microcephaly in Brazil

Story by Linda Bronstein

Microcephaly in Brazil

A man holds a baby who was born with microcephaly, in Recife, Brazil. Microcephaly is a birth defect where the head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. It can be caused by genetic abnormalities or by exposure to certain toxins or viruses during pregnancy. (Linda Bronstein/AFP/Getty Images)

This is an incredibly powerful image that brings to light the devastating effects of the Zika virus. The baby's small head is a heartbreaking reminder of the tragedy caused by this disease.

The photographer, Linda Bronstein, has captured the strength and resilience of the human spirit in this photo. The man holding the baby is not identified, but his expression conveys the deep love and care he has for this child. In spite of the challenges they face, they are managing to find joy in everyday moments.

This photo is a reminder of the importance of access to quality healthcare, and the need for continued research to find a cure for this devastating disease.

The photo was taken by Linda Bronstein, a photographer for AFP. This image was taken in Recife, Brazil.
