"The Hidden Toll" portrays activism as a journey of paradoxes. It is empowering yet exhausting, liberating yet binding. The project underscores the inherent tension in being a young activist, constantly juggling personal well-being and the weight of a world in dire need of change. About the photographer

Isabel Ortega hails from the vibrant city of Guadalajara, Mexico. Born and raised in a family of artists and journalists, the dichotomy of their professions instilled in Isabel an early appreciation for the power of visual storytelling. This passion carried her to the prestigious National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she pursued a degree in Visual Arts with a concentration in Photography.

Isabel's journey into the world of photojournalism began shortly after her graduation, when she started documenting local political movements. Recognizing the transformative role of youth in these movements, she found her niche in capturing their stories through her lens. Her work, filled with raw emotion and potent narratives, showcases the unique voice and perspective of this generation of change-makers.

A fervent believer in the transformative power of images, Isabel's approach to photography goes beyond simply documenting moments. She views her camera as a tool to delve into the human psyche, to explore the subtle nuances of emotion and vulnerability often overlooked in the loud world of activism. She carefully curates her frames, using lighting, composition, and color to create photographs that are as engaging visually as they are narratively.

The years of capturing the highs and lows of youth activism led Isabel to focus on the unspoken emotional and psychological toll it takes on these young advocates. "The Hidden Toll" marks her first major project in this direction, where she highlights this critical yet overlooked aspect of activism. Her empathetic approach and deep respect for her subjects are evident in her work, inviting viewers to engage with activism's human side beyond the slogans and protests.

As a woman of color navigating the predominantly male-dominated field of photojournalism, Isabel's journey hasn't been without challenges. However, her unwavering determination, coupled with her unique perspective, has only solidified her place in the field. She continues to break barriers, advocating for increased diversity in photojournalism while capturing the profound stories of the youth pushing for change.

Isabel's work has been exhibited in several national and international forums and has received critical acclaim for its depth, sensitivity, and evocative storytelling. She stands as a testament to the power of visual narratives in shaping discourse and inspiring change, an embodiment of the very spirit she captures through her lens.

Photo 1: The image captures Isabel alone in her room, surrounded by activist paraphernalia. The cluttered space speaks volumes - posters, slogans, images of inspiration. The soft, ambient lighting creates an intimate setting, making the viewer feel like an unobtrusive visitor. Isabel is shown at her desk, deep in thought, pen in hand, epitomizing the constant churn of an activist's mind. Photo 2: This photo depicts Isabel at a protest, amid a sea of faces. The wide-angle shot encapsulates the scale of the movement. The high contrast between the bright, hopeful banners and the somber expressions of the young protestors echoes the project's theme – activism's simultaneous empowerment and exhaustion. Photo 3: In a close-up shot, we see Isabel's face painted with fatigue, her eyes a mixture of determination and sadness. The intense focus on her expression, under dramatic, low-key lighting, creates a raw, emotionally charged image that drives home the hidden cost of activism. Photo 4: We see Isabel in a candid moment of joy, her face lit up in laughter while talking to a fellow activist. This high key, warm-toned image portrays the solidarity and shared camaraderie within the activist community, a stark contrast to the seriousness of their mission. Photo 5: The image shows Isabel, eyes closed, headphones on, lost in music. The photo, with its shallow depth of field and soft lighting, symbolizes the need for moments of retreat and personal solace amidst the relentless pace of activism.
